Message from Della, one of our county trainers.
Hi Everyone,
Please can I give some information about the process for verifying external first aid courses (often provided at work) which you wish to use instead of attending a county organised first aid course. You can find the process and details of Girlguiding requirements here:
https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/information-for-volunteers/learning-and-development/first-aid-training/accepted-first-aid-qualifications/
Please check the syllabus against the syllabus for your course – some tips for you from my experience:
- Most courses do not cover dental, ticks, and sepsis, and the link above provides simple reading for you to do to cover this, you’ll need to comment on your form that you have read and understood.
- 3 day first aid at work courses rarely cover child CPR, but may cover in a lunch hour if you ask.
- 2 day paediatric first aid courses often do not cover adult CPR, heart attacks or stroke.
- Emergency first aid at work courses generally do not cover quite a bit of the syllabus, and further training will likely be needed.
- If your course does cover some of these items but the syllabus does not say this, you’ll need to get some evidence from your provider.
As a qualified Girlguiding first aid trainer (and one of the region verifiers), I may be able to help fill some of these gaps, and I recommend that you aim to fill the gaps before you attempt to get your external course verified via the learning platform. I’m happy to be contacted at countytraining@girlguidingsomersetnorth.org.uk if you need help or advice with this.
